Today was Gr-8!

We are having a fantastic week in second grade! This week students have been working identifying characters in stories and naming character traits. We describe character traits as how the character is acting in the story. Students have been doing illustrations of the characters they have been reading about. George and Martha are two hippos that are best friends. They have many different encounters in the series we are reading. The George and Martha books are great because there are 5 stories in every book. They are short and always teach a little lesson. The expectation is that students will be able to do the following by the end of the week, although we will continue to work on it throughout the school year.

1. Identify the main character or characters in the story.
2. Name a character trait for the character.
3. Use information from the story to explain their character trait.

For Example: From today's lesson

The character I picked was George. George was lazy in the story because all he did was stay in bed all day. He would not get out of bed and go to the picnic with Martha. That is why I think George is lazy in the story.

The key is to have students be able to do this orally and in writing. As we discussed last night at Back-To-School Night writing becomes very important in reading comprehension this year and as students progress through school.

I also wanted to take a moment to thank all the parents that made it to Back-To-School Night last night. It was wonderful to meet some of you for the first time. I hope the information you received was helpful. Be sure to sign up for parent conferences ASAP! Thanks Again, and see you tomorrow!

Love,
Mrs. Del Balzo
