Rested and Ready!

I hope everyone had a restful and cool weekend. Wow was it hot! My husband and I went to the Maryland/Cal game on Saturday and both came home with a little sunburn. I guess we will use more sunblock next time.

I wanted to make sure everyone was updated for the week ahead. Here is what our week will look like in second grade.

Reading Focus: Setting - Students will discuss how the setting influences the characters and their actions. We will also discuss how the author uses sensory details to create a strong setting. Students will be drawing what they visualize the setting to be and writing about how the setting affects that characters and events. We will also be finishing up m-class testing. I should be able to get almost all students done by Wednesday so we can finalize guided reading groups and get them going more efficiently.

Writing - We are still writing for personal expression but this week we will be focusing on sentence fluency and trying to add more detail to our writing. We will use cut up sentences and try and add more interesting words to create longer sentences. We will also continue working on using capital letters and punctuation properly.

Spelling- Oh yes it is here! We will begin our first spelling exploration into the long a sound. Students will be brainstorming words with me in class and then we will work on finding words in texts as well as sorting words into groups. We will focus on ai a-e ay mostly. However, I will challenge some students to learn other patterns such as ei as in weight and neighbor as well as ea as in great! Students will have individual lists based on their spelling development.

Homework -
This week we will be adding spelling to our homework cycle. I have stapled in a homework schedule into each purple folder so students and parents know what homework is each night. Students will continue to have their reading logs to have signed every night and now they will be bringing home a spelling journal with an assignment in it each night for students to complete. These should be returned each day for me to check. I collect homework each day to see if students are having any trouble or if they need extra support.

This should pretty much take care of our week. I will be posting throughout the week to keep you up to date on what we have accomplished. Thank you for time and continued support of students and staff! See you Monday!

Love, Mrs. D.
