Kindergarten is so much fun!

Have you ever had a mind but couldn't make it up? That is what I asked our kindergarteners before we read the book Hunches and Bunches this week. I was able to visit three of our kindergarten classrooms this week and had a great time creating predictions and reading the Dr. Seuss story Hunches and Bunches . I used a magic 8 ball to preview the idea of making a prediction and a mystery bag asking students to use their background knowledge to create reasonable predictions for what we were going to be doing today. After I introduced the lesson we did a picture walk of the story and students made predictions based on what they saw in the pictures to get them ready for listening to the story. Making a prediction before reading gets our mind ready to focus on the story to see if our prediction is correct or incorrect. It was fun watching the students realize that their predictions from the picture walk were actually correct as we were reading. Ideas that didn't seem to go with the story were reflected upon after reading and we discussed that what we think will happen may not always match what the author actually wrote. Thinking before reading gets our students engaged in the text to make them active readers not just passive. Reading is thinking!!! Enjoy the rest of the week!
Love,
Mrs. Del Balzo
