I'm Back!

Just wanted to post that I am back in the building and let me assure all parents that teachers have been working extremely hard since the beginning of the year. As I have been around the building this week, I am so excited to see wonderful reading groups and instruction going on. I am hoping to get into classrooms a bit to get reacquainted with students and staff.

There are a lot things going on right now that I want to make you aware of. First of all applications for the Highly Gifted Center and Magnet School programs are due on November 8th. The application Highly Gifted Center is for students in third grade, if accepted into the program they would begin at Clearspring Elementary in 4th grade. The Middle School Magnet programs are for students in 5th grade that may want to apply to attend Roberto Clemente upon entering their 6th grade year. Global Screening for our second grade students will not begin until the spring so there are no worries there for now. After the applications have been submitted by parents I will get a list from the school and DCCAPS and begin putting portfolios of information together only for the students that applied to the different programs. Please remember these is a lot of competition to get into these programs and a very small percentage of students that apply get in. We do have wonderful instruction right here at Gibbs and we strive to meet the needs of all of our students each day!

Teachers did a great job implementing the reading assessments the county has us do in the fall. We will begin our winter testing window on January 11th. I can't wait to see all of the progress our students are making in reading. Map-R for grade 3-5 will be administered sometime between 1/18 and 2/11.

I hope everyone has had a wonderful fall season. I really enjoyed staying home with my two young boys for a few months but I am ready to back in action here at Gibbs. Please continue to call or email me with any questions/concerns you might have about your child's progress in reading. Together we will make sure that all of our Gibbs Gators are successful in reading!

Love,
Mrs. Del Balzo
