Finding a Book

I took me a while to find a great book this week but I finally think I did it! It's by one of my favorite authors Jack Prelutsky. He generally does poetry but The Wizard is a nice combination of his ability to rhyme with putting a great story line in place. This text would really be great for any student in 1st - 5th grade. A first grade student will fall in love with the rhyming words like air/there, yet a 5th grade student could get a lot out of the imagery and vocabulary for example, "which tinkles in the ashen air till flash... afire burns brightly there." Now come on that's just good writing! The illustrations for the book are done by Brandon Dorman and they are WONDERFUL, so head on down to the library and pick up The Wizard.

For this week's reading idea try to make reading a moment to moment occurrence. We are constantly reading all day long. If you make your children aware of all the reading you are doing throughout the day, road signs, menus, maps, the all important Toys R Us flyer:-), they will know how valuable it is in our everyday life. Now we don't want to bombard them but just make them aware. Each time I could remember to I told Austin what I was reading and why I was reading it. We often times have reluctant readers because they don't see the value in reading. However, they will be very upset if they get chicken nuggets instead of a hamburger in their Happy Meal. Reading gets us through the day so make them aware and they will learn to see the value! Have a great week next week. No baby yet but we are in count down mode!

Love,
Mrs. Del Balzo
