Wednesday 1/21/09

Welcome back. Today I finished almost everyone's testing so YIPPEE! I am so happy that is over. During whole group reading we discussed the word segregation. Then we read an article about Martin Luther King and how segregation was a problem during his lifetime. Students had a great conversation and we drew pictures about what the word meant after reading. Tomorrow we will discuss the word integrate and how Dr. King helped to integrate schools, and other places. We will also discuss how these two words are opposites or antonyms. In writing we read a letter from me and students found all the capital letters included in it. Then we talked and charted how and why we use capital letters. It seems students understand how to use them in isolation but when we started writing paragraphs we were having trouble applying our knowledge. Guided reading groups will get back on track tomorrow since testing is over. Students have new spelling words in their journals and their spelling tests are glued in them from last week. If your child missed last Friday I am giving them tonight to study and I will give them their test tomorrow. Many of them said they forgot how to spell them:-) Have a great night and I will see you tomorrow.
Hugs,
Mrs. Del Balzo
