M-Class Opens Today!

Just a reminder M-class testing is beginning again this week. This is the reading assessment we do three times a year to determine how students are progressing in reading. These assessments also help us determine on, above, or below reading levels for report cards. We have been progress monitoring students along the way so we know where they are reading in order to complete the testing efficiently and quickly. I wish I could say this will not interrupt our normal reading class format but in reality it does. I have to test each student individually one on one. I will be testing students during their normal guided reading group times. This way the rest of the day stays the same with little interruption. Here is what is on tap for the week ahead.

Reading AM- We will be working in guided reading groups to increase our fluency by rereading our just right books. By increasing how many words we read per minute we can increase our comprehension of text. In our whole group lesson we will be working on how to determine what a word means using pictures and sentences around the word. This will lead us into using context clues to understand words. Reading is thinking and we need to understand the words we read. During writing this week we will be taking our second quarter writing assessment. We will listen to or read an article on an animal. We will take notes on a graphic organizer and us it to create a paragraph about our animal. Just like our penguin paragraphs we worked on last week! For spelling we are still working on short i. During the week we will be finding short i words in text and sorting them by what we observe in the word.

Reading PM - We will be working guided reading groups to get ready for our next literature circle meeting. We will be assigned jobs that we will need to complete by Friday to participate in group. Our novel groups will be focusing on character traits in the story and our other group will be working on cause and effect relationships in stories. I have a few more reminders for the week ahead!
1. Get picture money in for class pictures. Our class picture will be taken on Thursday at 10:20 am.
2. A field trip permission slip will be coming home Monday for Mad Science. The cost is 6.11. Please return the permission slip and money as soon as possible.
3. It is getting very cold this week, so please dress for the weather. Students may have outdoor recess.

I can't wait to see all of you tomorrow!

Hugs,
Mrs. Del Balzo
