January 8, 2009

We are almost to the end of another great week. How on earth do they go so fast? Between the eight month old and all of the seven and eight year olds I teach the time just flies by. We are continuing to work and complete assignments before the end of the quarter. Please remind students to finish homework and return it to school. We were also discussing today the importance of spelling. When words are in a book or on the page I do expect them to be spelled correctly. Our sight words are also important. Words like (they, are, very) are words we should be spelling correctly or using the word wall to help us. I talked to students about stepping up and taking responsibility for spelling things correctly instead of asking each time they need help with a word. We talked about all the resources we have in the room and how we can become good spellers with just a little more effort. I know they can do it!

Reading AM - We met in guided reading groups today to finish our BCRs for the week. We worked on problem and solution as well as text features. I am so impressed with the sentence structure students are beginning to use! For whole group today we read a story together and then students worked with a partner to answer a BCR about problem and solution. I was delighted to hear and see students helping each other with words and ideas. Our BCR writing took a lot of time so that was also our writing lesson for the day. We will finish our penguin writing tomorrow. We also practiced our spelling words and reviewed how to make plural nouns adding s and es to a word.

Reading PM- We began by going over spelling homework for tonight. Students are to break words into syllables, they should have examples in their spelling notebooks. Then we went over our language sentences for the day again focusing on using apostrophes to show ownership. During guided reading we worked on our chapter notes for Chapters 3 and 4 as well as took time to get students ready for their first literature circle tomorrow. My other guided group worked on reading out loud and reading accurately. I asked them to reread this evening so we could go on to our BCR question tomorrow. During writing students began writing their penguin articles and then we worked on our animal books. I can't wait to get those done!

Reminders for tomorrow:
Language quiz
Bring your job sheet complete for literature circles
Bring your zip-lock and spelling journals
Bring a positive "can do" attitude!

Until tomorrow,
Mrs. D.
