I have read a great picture book this week called, The Color of Us by Karen Katz. It's a book written through the eyes of a child that looks at the beautiful skin colors that surround us each day. By the end of the story the little girl has portraits around her bedroom with pictures of all of her friends and all of their beautiful skin colors. It makes me think how blessed we are to live in such a wonderful and diverse community here at Gibbs Elementary School. Each day I learn new things from children and their families that I never had the opportunity of doing growing up in a little farm town. It just goes to show that even if we are adults we still have so much to learn about different cultures and backgrounds. We are so forutunate to have a school community that celebrates such diversity. I heard the announcements read on Monday in English and Spanish for Hispanic Heritage Month! I learned at leasat three new words in a Spanish and find myself miles behind many of our students that are bilingual.
I want to encourage parents/students/staff to check out books that are written in dual languages. We are so forutnate to have a school library that has so many. If you are looking to embrace all the wonderful and different cultures our school community has to offer please see Ms. Su.
Have a wonderful day and take a moment to look around. How many beautiful skin colors do you see? Try, The Color of Us by Karen Katz.
