I just wanted to take a minute to welcome everyone back to school. It is again my hope to keep up a weekly blog of what is going on in our reading program within the building.
Currently we are knee deep into our first round of reading assessments. Assessments are given three times a year in grades K-5 to help us make instructional decisions about reading to help propell our students forward. Kindergarten through second grade complete the MCPSAP-PR, an assessment given individually to children to determine their guided reading level. This helps teachers make informed decisions about grouping practices and also helps to guide their instruction during the year. Third through fifth grade are assessed using the MAP-R assessment. A computerized assessment that gives us a lexile level and RIT score for students. This year the county has given us proficiency cut scores. Please see your child's reading teacher or myself for more information.
As many of you may be aware this month begins Hispanic Heritage Month. I am going to try and link up some websites to our blog so you can explore anything you might be interested in talking about with your children. I will be suggesting some texts for teachers to use in their classes to explore the richness of this month.
This is our third year open at Gibbs and I'm more excited each year to exten all that we do in reading. I am always open to suggestions from parents about how to make our program even better. You can always reach me through email/phone.
Let's have a great year!!
